Eda Faltýnek wants to study, but instead of college he is sent to a bakery. He doesn't enjoy the work there, and so he goes off to Ostrava as a volunteer worker. During one shift he saves a labourer from certain death. A television report is shot about his heroism, and brings Eda into contact with Karla, a member of the TV crew. Together they wander about the town all night. The next day Eda doesn't turn up to the meeting they have arranged, but with the fee from the television he at least buys the book that he has talked about with Karla - Čapek's War with the Newts.
